Our Ph.D. Programs
Being physically and mentally healthy, students should possess solid professional frontier knowledge, rigorous logical thinking ability, superb experimental skills, rich humanistic quality and international vision. Students need to acquire systematic and in-depth knowledge in their research direction and related fields, including experimental technology, and have a deep understanding of its cutting-edge aspects as well as the ability to independently engage in scientific research. Doctoral degree holders should showcase leadership ability, being able to independently undertake research and development projects of significance to the development of the discipline or national economic construction and be competent for teaching and research activities or technical management in higher education institutions. All students admitted will participate in two rounds of rotation. We have a system where through a series of interactive exercises and activities, students can select a mentor that best suits them. If there are still unsettled students after two rounds of rotation, they can rotate for the third round. Each rotation in a laboratory lasts three weeks.
Our Short-term Programs
Research Internship
At present, Westlake University has attracted nearly one hundred scientists to join us. Each scientist is responsible for an independent laboratory. There are 39 laboratories open with internship positions at the School of Life Sciences. These programs run for two months, July through August, annually.
During the internship, interns can work with a selected laboratory. The specifics of each program are specially formulated by the laboratory tutors with the interns. In addition to studying and doing projects with the instructor in the laboratory, interns also can participate in all of the academic activities of the school!
For example, in “WE News & Ideas”, students can feel the fierce collision of new ideas and new discoveries. In “WeSalon”, students can listen to what other labs in the school are doing. Moreover, various famous teacher forums and special academic lectures are also open to interns.
Summer Camp
The summer camp plans to recruit 80 students. The camp’s activities include school introductions, academic lectures, “face-to-face talks with chair professors” (Professor Yigong Shi, etc.), unrestricted access to PIs, doctoral student exchange meetings, and laboratory visits. After participating in summer camp activities, students will receive a certificate of completion of the ‘Westlake University Life Science Summer Camp’. There are also certificates for the camp’s top performers.
Courses
Graduate courses are divided into common degree courses, core degree courses and elective courses, among which the common degree courses and core degree courses constitute degree courses. Common degree courses include: political theory, foreign languages, foreign languages in special fields. Core degree courses include elementary degree courses and specialized degree courses. Elective courses include, common elective courses, specialized elective courses, and cross-disciplinary elective courses. Elementary degree courses enable graduate students to learn and master the basic theories and research methods of a discipline. Specialized degree courses are for graduate students to acquire systematic specialized knowledge, broaden their theoretical foundations and improve their professional capacity. Elective courses are for graduate students to further broaden their theoretical foundations, expand their knowledge and improve corresponding abilities.
Required procedures refer to the education procedures that graduate students must complete and pass before applying for their degree, including dissertation proposal, qualifying examination, dissertation pre-examination and academic activities and practice etc. Graduate students should participate in the compulsory training program and pass the corresponding assessment according to relevant requirements. Social practice, social public welfare services, innovation & entrepreneurship and other activities recognized by the academic degree evaluation sub-committee can be listed as the requirements of practical processes of postgraduate students. Credit and assessment requirements should be clearly specified in the education program.
